Combined fuel ensures heating for strawberry farm
In spring 2017 Manco and Linka Energy installed a new biomass plant for the Scottish strawberry farm. Combined heating from straw and wood chips will supply their new poly tunnels with heat.
Easter Grangemuir is primarily a strawberry farm, but they also grow cereals, potatoes and broccoli on their 400 ha land. The farm is located in the eastern part of Scotland, north of Edinburgh.
Before the installation of their new straw plant, the farm used oil for their grain drying facility.
By using combined combustion Easter Grangemuir can change fuel depending on need and costs, and are hereby ensured a higher security of supply.
Heating from the straw plant is used for heating a number of new poly tunnels where their strawberries are grown, in addition to drying grain.
The plant
At Easter Grangemuir the 995 kW Linka boiler is used for burning both straw and wood chips. The installed control system enables an easy switch in fuel by the push of a single button.
Linka’s well-known straw shredder is here adjusted for combined combustion, where a rubber belt is added to the 12 meter long conveyor. In addition removal heightened sides are also added so the conveyor can be filled with wood chips or another granulated fuel. When firing with wood chips, the removable sides are mounted on the pitch.
The plant is also equipped with an automated ash removal system, where the ash is transported from the boiler to a 5 m3 ash container by augers. The straw plant was installed in March 2017.
