Linka® Twin Shredder system - type 123

Efficient and well-proven shredder system for boilers from 4MW til 20MW

Linka Energy’s shredding system (TWIN) is a well-proven straw shredder, originally designed, developed, and produced in the mid-1970s, based on the experience Linka has gained over many years of working with biomass. Since then, in 2009, the TWIN technology has been refined and developed into the shredding system we have today, which we proudly consider one of the best straw shredders in the world.

The straw shredder’s power consumption is the lowest on the market, making it highly attractive for energy-conscious district heating plants, industry, and the biogas sector (for straw processing).

The LINKA TWIN 123 shredding system can handle a wide range of straw types, including seed grass, rapeseed, wheat, rye, oats, and similar. The system can be combined with an automatic crane system to feed the straw line with bales and can be equipped with the LINKA string removal system, which automatically removes the strings that bind the bale.

This results in a fully automated industrial straw handling system, seamlessly delivering straw to the next stage of the process.

The shredding system easily handles fuel with up to 30% moisture and can efficiently process both big bales (Heston) and midi-big bales (Krone).

The shredding system is used by industries, large-scale farms, institutions, and heating plants, as well as in biogas and pyrolysis plants, including in our StB lines, where straw is used for biogas production.

The technology behind the Linka® TWIN shredding system

The TWIN shredder features a low-speed drum system, which significantly reduces the risk of spark formation due to foreign objects in the fuel and minimizes wear on the system.

The low speed of the shredding drums also results in one of the industry’s lowest energy consumptions per ton of shredded straw delivered. The controlled shredding of the bales ensures a consistent supply of straw for the subsequent process.

Fuel is pulled upward by the shredder’s drum, where it is shredded into smaller pieces before falling into a trough on the opposite side. At the bottom of the trough, two augers—one right-handed and one left-handed—transport the straw to a common, centred discharge point in the middle of the shredder.

Beneath the discharge, either augers or a chain conveyor can be placed for further processing; the choice depends on the capacity and overall layout and application of the plant.

When the shredder is used for boilers, the TWIN shredder operates based on the boiler’s heat demand. If fuel production is too low, the drum speed increases—and vice versa.

The forward movement of the conveyor belt increases along with the pressure on the drum rollers, which is based on amp measurements of the rollers, until the desired oxygen level percentage or capacity is achieved. Similarly, the speed is reduced if the oxygen level is too low or if additional capacity is required.

The shredding system can be equipped with conveyor belts of any desired length and can be combined into a fully automated straw handling system with a crane system that adjusts the delivery of straw bales to match the capacity the shredder is set to provide, as well as a LINKA string removal system for efficient removal of strings from the straw bales.

Facts – Shredder for boilers

  • The straw bales are placed on the straw conveyor and transported to the shredder. Here, the shredding drums will tear the straw bale into smaller pieces, which fall into the transverse auger.
  • The transverse auger transports the shredded straw to the inclined auger, which leads the straw into the stoker and further into the boiler.
  • A safety switch is installed on the rear doors of the shredder, which stops the shredder when the door is opened.
  • The shredder is constructed from steel grade 37, which is surface-treated afterward. The shredding drum is equipped with blades. The shredder is fitted with three shredding drums.
  • The shredder is equipped with an automatic fire extinguishing system that sprays water over the shredder in case of fire. A PT100 sensor is installed, which begins to open the water supply at 60°C (set point in the control system).
