Combined straw and wood chips plant provides green heating
The Swedish manor Spannarps Säteri uses the heat from their Linka plant to heat up the poultry shed, in addition to the main building and its properties.
Spannarps Säteri is a Swedish manor located in the southern part of Sweden, north of Helsingborg. The manor mainly focuses on broiler production as well as agriculture and forestry.
The plant at Spannarps is a used and renovated plant, where the boiler, shredder and conveyor were previously used. Linka installed a new step grate inside the boiler, a new wood chips combustion system along with a new control system for combined combustion.
The possibility to renovate and reinstall a used boiler emphasizes the longevity of Linka’s plants.
By combining straw and wood chips it ensures a high flexibility and security of supply, compared to only using one type of fuel.
In addition, Linka has also planned and installed piping for all properties on the estate, and for the installation of underfloor heating in the shed.
The plant
The hot water plant consists of a 1,000 kW biomass boiler with a step grate and build-in control system with an SMS alarm option.
When using straw as fuel the shredder with a 50 meter conveyor is used. The straw is transported from here to the boiler through a closed pipe system. Three scrapers are installed in a 35 m3 scraper system. These scrapers move the wood chips forward into a sunken auger, from where the fuel is transported into the boiler via augers. Finally an oil boiler is installed as backup, and can be used in case of failure on the biomass boiler.

New Linka plant reduces the use of straw
In 2014 Linka installed a biomass plant at Vennerslund Estate. Since then it has reduced the estate's use of straw by 1/3, while their heat consumption has increased by around 33 %.
Vennerslund is located on Falster, a large island in Eastern Denmark. The estate mainly focuses on agriculture and hunting, as well as property rental.
Before installation of the new plant Vennerslund used a 2 MW boiler that required manual firing, where the straw bale is placed directly in the combustion chamber.
The heat is primarily used for heating the estate itself and surrounding buildings. The estate has a
need for around 4 MWh every year. Since the new boiler is far more efficient, Vennerslund only needed an 800 kW boiler, despite of their increased heating consumption.
Linka was chosen as supplier of the new boiler based on recommendations from colleagues in the area. Linka facilitated their application for subsidies which covered some of the expenses for the new plant. Operation staff on the estate has been instructed in how they can service their plant regularly and hereby optimise efficiencies.
The plant
An 800 kW straw plant from Linka has supplied Vennerslund with environmentally friendly heat, since 2014. In addition a straw shredder with a 30 meter conveyor, that can hold around 15 bales, was installed.
When operating to the maximum the estate uses two straw bales daily, which means that the conveyor only needs to be filled once a week. Therefore the manual operational need is limited.
The PLC control system further ensures a minimum maintenance need by monitoring the plant’s efficiency and sending out alarms when needed.
Ash from the boiler is automatically transported to the external ash container which is placed outside the boiler room.
Linka was also tasked with dimensioning and installing heating pipes from the boiler room to the estate’s different buildings.

New Linka straw plant for the estate
On Holmegaard the heat from their Linka straw plant is primarily used for heating their buildings, while part of the heat is used for drying grain. When installed, the plant replaced a 21 year old Linka plant.
The estate is located in Denmark and is run as a traditional estate with focus on agriculture, forestry and property rentals. The estate has around 1,860 ha of fields, forests, swamp and meadows. Before installation of the new plant, the estate used an old Linka boiler from 1993.
This was based on “the cigar principal”. The heat from the plant is primarily used for heating up the estate’s main building, Skovriddersalen (a large hall) and around 10 other properties.
In addition about 25 % of the heat is used for drying grain during the season. During the summer season the majority of the heat is used for this purpose.
The plant
A 950 kW straw plant was installed at Holmegaard during the autumn of 2014. The system also consists of a Linka shredder, adjusted for the customer’s existing conveyor. The straw is transported from the shredder to the cell sluice by a straw auger.
Soot valves are installed on the boiler which injects air through the boiler’s flue pipes, thus keeping them clean. This means that the flue pipes only need cleaning a few times per year.
Automatic ash removal transports the ash outside the boiler, into an ash container located next to the boiler.
