High-performance 8.0 MW Linka® straw–wood chip boiler plant: Future-proof efficiency and sustainable operation.
Ryomgård District Heating expanded its production capacity in 2018 with an advanced 8 MW biomass plant from Linka Energy. The expansion was necessary because the original 4 MW straw-fired plant from 1989—also supplied by Linka—after almost 30 years of operation could no longer meet the growing demand for heat.
Since 1989, the number of consumers has increased from 260 to 790, and total heat production today amounts to approximately 22,000 MWh per year.
Over the years, the old plant had combusted 119,000 tonnes of straw and produced around 430,000 MWh of heat.
With the commissioning of the new 8 MW plant, Ryomgård District Heating is well prepared for the future, while operations have become more flexible and sustainable.

The plant.
The new 8 MW biomass plant has been constructed as an integrated and fully automated energy solution, in which fuel handling, combustion, flue gas cleaning and ash handling are combined into a single, operationally reliable unit.
The plant is designed to fire both straw and wood chips and combines Linka’s proven combustion technology with high operational reliability and flexibility.
The overall configuration ensures stable heat production throughout the year and full compliance with all emission requirements.

Fuel handling system.
Straw is delivered in large bales and stored in the existing straw storage facility, where a fully automated crane system transports the bales to the firing system. Along the way, the fuel passes through a safety zone, ensuring a safe and stable fuel supply.

This configuration provides Ryomgård with a flexible and fully automated fuel supply, supporting high operational reliability as well as continuous and cost-efficient heat production.


Firing and combustion technology.
Firing is carried out via Linka’s straw cutter, which chops the straw into a uniform and manageable structure, ensuring stable and controlled feeding to the ram feeder, even when straw quality varies.
The fuel is then conveyed into the square combustion chamber, where Linka’s multi-stage combustion system and zone-controlled air supply ensure high burnout efficiency and stable operation.
The boiler’s patented air distribution principles contribute to the high efficiency and low emissions, while the combustion technology makes the plant robust regarding varying fuel types and moisture contents.
Flue gas cleaning and chimney.
The flue gas is first cleaned in a multi-cyclone and subsequently in a bag filter, reducing the dust content to a level well below applicable limit values.
The cleaned flue gas is then discharged via a 40-metre-high CE-marked steel chimney, designed with a twin flue and effective insulation.
The combination of flue gas cleaning, filtration and chimney ensures stable draught conditions and clean, controlled emissions with very low particulate and NOₓ levels.
Ash handling system and operational reliability.
Ash handling is fully automated and comprises bottom ash conveying and transverse ash handling, transporting the ash to an indoor container.
The system is constructed from wear-resistant materials and dimensioned for continuous operation with both straw and wood chips.
The robust design ensures a stable material flow and minimal maintenance requirements, contributing to the plant’s overall high operational reliability.


PLC and SCADA control system.
The plant is controlled via a Siemens-based PLC and SCADA system, providing full monitoring of temperatures, air flows, draft, fuel supply and safety functions.
Emissions are continuously monitored and regulated to ensure that the plant always operates in compliance with applicable environmental requirements.
The SCADA system also enables remote monitoring and allows operating personnel to easily follow plant status and optimise day-to-day operation.
